Camping Group/ Joining Safaris
A camping Safari is one of the best ways to experience all that Tanzania has to offer. You can expect plenty of wildlife and nights spent above the open skies in a tent. This isn’t just where you get given a tent and left to fend for yourself. These Tanzanian camping safaris are fully guided and come with everything you need to enjoy some home comforts while still experiencing a great camping adventure.
Our guides will pitch your tents up nearby or just inside the national parks. After a day of watching wildlife, you’re not heading back to some sealed-off resort. You’ll be falling asleep with the sound of lions in the distance and nothing but canvas between you and the night.
Camping in Tanzania feels more down-to-earth. After sunset, you’re by the fire chatting about what you saw. Maybe a lion in the grass. Maybe a giraffe walking past.
You don’t need prior camping experience as everything is arranged for you. All you need to do is show up, and it’s the kind of trip you’ll still be talking about years later.
Group Vs Private Camping Safari
Kiota Adventures runs two main types of safaris to suit different people and budgets. Both offer the same access to amazing wildlife and come with a skill guide. The difference comes down to how you want to travel.
Group Safaris
Our group safaris are where you will share your adventures with others, typically in a small group of between 6 and 8 people, in a safari vehicle with a pop-up roof. You will all get a window seat. The dates will be fixed, and the route will already be planned in advance.
A Tanzanian group safari is great if you’re traveling alone or with a friend to keep the costs down. This means you can split any costs not included in the safari price, and you also get to meet other like-minded travelers.
Private Camping Safaris
If you have a larger budget, then a private camping safari could be an excellent choice. As it’s your group with your own personal guide, you can say how many days you want to spend on Safari, as well as deciding which animals you really want to try and hunt down.
Private safaris in Tanzania also suit families who want more privacy or flexibility. The trip can be built on your own schedule. You’ll still camp each night the same as you would on a group safari, but just with more space and control.
You’re not tied to a rigid schedule. If you spot a leopard lounging in a tree and want to sit and watch, you can. If you want to leave camp earlier or stay out longer, just say the word. That’s the beauty of having your own guide and vehicle.

What’s The Best Time For a Camping Safari?
Tanzania is suitable for a safari all year round, but we recommend visiting during the dry season.
June to October
This is the driest time of the year and the most popular for tourists. The animals are easier to spot as they all come and gather around the watering holes which makes great viewing for tourists.
It is also a great time of the year as it’s when the Great Migration happens. This is when thousands of wildebeest migrate across the country through rivers and open land, which leaves them more vulnerable to predators.
January and February
These months are also good. This is when many calves are born, which also means predators are not far behind. There are also fewer people visiting during this time, which can be a bonus.
March and May
Just a quick note on these months, as this is typically the wettest part of the year. The roads can be muddier, which can restrict where we can travel in the cars. A few campsites might also be closed but you still have a good chance of seeing a lot of animals.
Cost of a Camping Safari
Our camping safaris start at around $200 per person, per day. This price is for one of the group trips as the cost for the guides and equipment can be split between a large group of travellers.
If you wanted something more private (especially in high season), the rate can go up to $350 per person, per day.
What makes the price change?
The group sizes and the time of the year. National park fees can fluctuate throughout the year, with some parks charging more than others. We will always provide you with a clear quite of what you can expect to pay before you book.
We’ve designed our trips to be affordable with a high level of service. You still receive expert guidance and proper camping equipment. Oh, and don’t forget about the good food. The only things we don’t cover are your flights, insurance, tips, and any personal expenses, such as drinks or souvenirs.
